Last month, medical schools throughout the United States celebrated Match Day — that joyful, long-awaited day when medical students “match” into the residency program where they will complete their education. For many students, it is indeed a joyful day, while thousands of their classmates are left to scramble to find a training program, since our country doesn’t have enough residency spots to accommodate every qualified medical student we graduate.
This Match Day mismatch is a significant contributor to the downward spiral of our healthcare system and standards of medical care, with an over-abundance of substitutes when what we need is more physicians.
It is time for action; these students deserve it, and our country’s health depends on it. Learn how we can all make a difference in this week’s Moment of Wellness: Match Day Matters!
With hope,
