A Teenager Spreads Hope in the Pandemic

Dylan 3D-prints ear savers

A few weeks ago, I received a message from one of the moms at my children’s school. She wanted me to know her 12-year-old son is 3D-printing “ear savers” for people wearing masks all day, particularly medical professionals and all first responders. From paramedics and firefighters like his cousin to physicians and labor & delivery nurses, like another cousin, and the wonderful NICU nurses at Winnie Palmer Hospital, this young man wanted to make their work a bit better as they care for others.

What Dylan may not realize is that his mom’s message brought tears to my eyes. His kindness in wanting to bring comfort to those working so hard to help others is not only heartwarming in itself, but also a harbinger of something people need in excess during this pandemic: HOPE!

The message I received from Jennifer warmed my heart. It reminded me thoughtful acts of kindness like these ear savers help transform circumstances by renewing a sense of hope. They strengthen people’s resolve to persevere with a reminder their efforts are recognized, somebody cares, and they are not alone.

Days later, Jennifer wrote again to share they were now also sending ear savers to a local supermarket. I love this so much; don’t you? I especially loved joining in Dylan’s blessing, and having the opportunity to share ear savers with an entire medical office. That was a meaningful breath of fresh air, and I was grateful to be able to participate.

According to Jennifer, her son is doing this “out of a desire to help his community and show appreciation to medical workers, first responders, and anyone who is required to wear a mask at work!” If every community has people like this young man, kindness and hope will continue to rise.

Thank you, Dylan, for saving ears while spreading hope!
